By Mark DaCosta- Amanza Walton-Desir, a prominent legal figure and former member of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), has voiced her concerns regarding the current political climate in our nation, particularly in light of the recent campaign launch by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP). Her statements reflect a growing sentiment among citizens who feel neglected amidst escalating hardships. Walton-Desir’s critique articulates the frustration of many Guyanese who are grappling with daily survival as economic pressures intensify.

The recent rally, framed by the PPP as a campaign launch, has been characterised by Walton-Desir as a mere theatrical display devoid of any genuine engagement with the pressing issues confronting ordinary citizens. She likened the event to a “disgraceful charade,” accusing the administration of obscuring the real suffering of the populace with what she perceives as superficial entertainment and extravagance.

Echoing sentiments shared by numerous individuals across the country, Walton-Desir expressed disbelief at the PPP’s apparent apathy towards the Venezuelan crisis at our borders, describing it as “a million-dollar distraction soaked in smoke, lights, and lies.” An increasing influx of displaced individuals is overstretching local resources, leaving communities overwhelmed and schools and clinics unable to accommodate the rising demand for services.

Amidst this backdrop, Walton-Desir denounced the lack of any substantial discussion regarding immigration policy and border protection, further emphasising the need for urgent action. The inaction from the government has created a sense of desperation among citizens, as issues such as soaring grocery prices and widespread food insecurity dominate their daily lives.

Reports reveal that many families struggle to put food on the table, with some parents even forgoing meals to ensure their children are fed. Against this dire scenario, Walton-Desir dismissed the PPP’s stage-managed spectacles as a “slap in the face to every suffering Guyanese,” insisting that the Forward Guyana Movement aims to champion the rights and dignity of the people rather than indulge in superficial electoral antics.

The Forward Guyana Movement, of which Walton-Desir is the founder, has been vocal about its commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the nation. The movement stands against the status quo, casting a spotlight on the corrupt practices alleged to permeate the Guyana Police Force.

Walton-Desir condemned the pervasive corruption that has supposedly infiltrated the ranks of law enforcement, suggesting that a compromised police force serves to maintain the PPP’s grip on power. Her remarks highlight a growing assertion within the movement that the silence surrounding police misconduct is not merely an oversight but a calculated strategy supporting the entrenched regime.

The Forward Guyana Movement has submitted its candidate list at the Umana Yana, signalling its readiness to compete in the upcoming elections. Walton-Desir emphasised her commitment to leading efforts that focus on justice, security, and dignified living for the citizens, contrasting sharply with the PPP’s ostentatious approach. Her assertion, “PPP wants another term? Then let them win it with truth, not tinsel and fanfare,” challenges the ruling party to offer genuine solutions instead of empty promises wrapped in elaborate and expensive campaigns.
