CGTN – The BRICS mechanism is not targeted at any country, and there are no winners in tariff wars, a spokesperson for Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

Mao Ning made the remarks in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s accusation that BRICS supports so-called “anti-American” policies, as well as his threat to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on countries aligning with the group’s policies.

The BRICS mechanism is an important platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries, Mao told a regular press briefing in Beijing.

She noted that the mechanism advocates openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation, does not engage in bloc confrontation, and is not targeted at any country.

Mao also reiterated China’s stated position on tariffs, saying that there are no winners in trade wars or tariff wars, and that protectionism offers no path forward.
