In a fiery letter to the editor, former Georgetown Mayor Pt. Ubraj Narine has taken aim at Region Four Vice‑Chairman Samuel Sandy, accusing him of political opportunism and betrayal of public trust.
Narine begins by dismissing Sandy’s recent moral turnaround. He writes:
“Only now—five years after the 2020 elections, with another election cycle looming—Sandy has found his voice. … But Guyanese aren’t fools. We see this for exactly what it is: opportunism dressed up as conscience.”
The letter criticises Sandy for his silence following the disputed 2020 elections, asking pointedly:
“Where was this photographic ‘evidence’ when it could have mattered? Silent. Absent. Missing in action.”
Narine reminds readers that Sandy was active in the opposition:
“He took up the position of the regional vice chairman with the same APNU+AFC votes. Where was your integrity then?”
He strongly rejects Sandy’s recent endorsement of President Irfaan Ali and the PPP, calling it “not bravery. This is betrayal. Not just of a political party, but of a nation.” Narine underscores Sandy’s admission that he had “Statements of Poll, the pictures, the data—but chose to sit on it,” adding rhetorically, “Why? Because of fear? Or was it calculation?”
Highlighting Sandy’s shifting allegiance, the letter states:
“Now, conveniently seated as Vice Chairman in Region Four—thanks to political realignment—he sings a new tune. But no amount of PPP patronage will buy back the trust he forfeited.”
Narine also warns that the PPP itself remains wary of Sandy’s motivations:
“A man who betrays one side when the winds change will betray the other when it suits him. Loyalty is not his currency—opportunism.”
He concludes with a vow from the electorate:
“We will not forget. We will not be swayed. And we will not be fooled.”
The letter ends with a strong appeal:
“The Guyanese people deserve better. And they deserve it from those who stand up in the storm—not just when the coast is clear.”
Pt. Ubraj Narine, JP, COA, a former Staff Sergeant in the GDF and ex‑Mayor of Georgetown, remains a vocal figure in holding leaders accountable. His criticism comes days after Samuel Sandy publicly abandoned the APNU+AFC to endorse President Ali and the PPP ahead of the 2025 elections
