By Mark DaCosta-Our homeland stands unwavering in the face of mounting aggression from Venezuela, a nation increasingly brazen in its attempts to undermine our sovereignty. Recent developments surrounding the Essequibo region have ignited both patriotic fervour within our borders and significant condemnation from international allies. As threats from Caracas escalate, so too does our unity and resolve to protect what is rightfully ours.

Venezuela’s actions in recent months have crossed all lines of decency and legality, marking a troubling trend of aggression that cannot be ignored or tolerated. The Venezuelan regime, led by Nicolás Maduro, has embarked on a series of unlawful initiatives aimed at asserting dominion over Essequibo, all while dismissing international rulings meant to foster peace and stability in the region. Among these provocations are illegal referenda, attempts to construct military infrastructure, and a blatant disregard for our borders — each an unmistakable affront to our sovereignty and a challenge to the principles of international law.

Most recently, the Maduro administration is set to hold  illegitimate elections for a governor and legislative council in the Essequibo region, a move widely condemned as a sham designed to assert control over territories that rightfully belong to our nation. The United States Bureau for Western Hemisphere Affairs issued a strong denunciation, stating, “The United States rejects all attempts by Nicolas Maduro and his illegitimate regime to undermine Guyana’s territorial integrity, including this latest sham election in the Essequibo region.” Such statements from powerful allies reinforce the stance that Venezuela’s actions are not merely assertive — they are aggressive encroachments on our land and rights.

President Irfaan Ali has been unyielding in speaking out against these attempts to violate our territorial claims. During a patriotic concert held on the Essequibo Coast, he addressed fellow citizens, asserting, “Essequibo belongs to Guyana.” His words resonate deeply as they encapsulate the shared sentiment that our homeland will not yield to the Venezuelan bullies. These firmly articulated beliefs are echoed in the recent ruling from the International Court of Justice, which mandates Venezuela refrain from actions that could jeopardise the status quo of Essequibo — yet Maduro, emboldened by his desire for territorial expansion, continues to flout such rulings.

The President’s speech highlighted the staggering array of Venezuelan provocations that have disrupted our peace. He referred to illegal referenda and unapproved construction projects aimed at integrating Essequibo into Venezuelan territory, as well as aggressive incursions into our Exclusive Economic Zone where international oil operations are underway. Just last week, Guyanese military patrols in the Cuyuni River were fired upon from across the border, further illustrating the dire situation and the lengths to which our neighbour will go to undermine our security.

Mirroring the sentiments expressed by our leaders, the citizens of our nation have united in expressing their rejection of Venezuela’s aggressive tactics. The National Patriotic Concert was not merely a cultural event; it transformed into a powerful demonstration of our collective identity as a people unwilling to cower before external threats. Voices raised in song proclaimed our unwavering spirit, as Guyanese waved the Golden Arrowhead amidst calls for solidarity and national pride.

In light of these trying times, the international community has increasingly rallied behind Guyana, with entities such as CARICOM, the Commonwealth, and the United Nations Security Council issuing statements of support. Such backing sends a clear message to Caracas that its aggressive stance is not only unjustifiable but also counterproductive. As President Ali stated, “Our borders were settled in 1899, and the ICJ is the only forum for any dispute — not aggression, not propaganda, not elections.”

It is also worth noting the internal political landscape as our government has passed resolutions reaffirming the irrefutable bond between our people and our territory. Even amidst political unrest, there has been a clear consensus on the matter of our borders. Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton made it unequivocally clear that, despite his party’s discontent with the current government, they remain united on the claim that “Guyana’s border with Venezuela was settled in 1899.” Such statements embody the collective sentiment that our identity is wrapped up in our land, and any attempt to dispossess us of our rightful territory will be met with relentless national resolve.

The ongoing situation reflects a growing understanding that defending our sovereignty is non-negotiable. Venezuela’s aggression serves only to strengthen our resolve as a nation. Our patriotic fervour is emboldening us to not only stand in defiance of threats but to actively engage with and support one another as we celebrate our rich history, culture, and identity. The nation remains committed to projecting an unshakeable image of strength and unity in the face of continued external pressures.
