Georgetown, Guyana – In a stunning public statement, sanctioned businessman Shell Mohamed has accused elements within Guyana’s political establishment of orchestrating a campaign of economic sabotage, character assassination, and visa revocations against him and others allegedly linked to the government.
Mohamed, who, along with his son and their companies, was sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) nine months ago, broke his silence to reveal the devastating impact on his businesses, which he claims have been “completely halted” due to American companies severing ties. However, he insists that local authorities have gone far beyond the U.S. sanctions, allegedly blocking him from conducting business in his own country.
In a dramatic escalation, Mohamed alleged that several individuals close to the current administration have had their U.S. visas revoked, seemingly as a consequence of their connections to him, though he maintains he is “totally unaware” of them. He also accused two local media entities, The Daily News and Guyana’s Critic, of acting as surrogates for the ruling party by spreading misinformation.
The most shocking claim came when Mohamed suggested that high-ranking officials have targeted him unfairly, refusing to grant necessary approvals for his business operations. He stated that his company’s application to traverse Guyana’s waters was denied and that his long-held mining land permits are being withheld without justification.
Mohamed warned that these actions represent a dangerous abuse of power, hinting at possible legal action. “We are contemplating taking this to court,” he said, signaling a potential landmark battle over political interference in private enterprise.
In a final ominous note, Mohamed alluded to growing concerns over his and his son’s safety, warning of “strange occurrences” that he believes could be linked to an assassination attempt.
With corruption allegations, political reprisals, and hints of economic sabotage, this latest revelation threatens to shake Guyana’s political landscape to its core. The government has yet to respond to these explosive claims.
