By Mark DaCosta- Longstanding member of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Vanessa Kissoon, has tendered her resignation from the party, citing personal reasons.
According to a report by a local media outlet, in a brief interview with News Source Guyana, Kissoon confirmed her departure but refrained from providing detailed comments on her decision. She stated, “I did tender my resignation… at this point, I would want to leave it at that, and I will, once I think it’s necessary, make a public thing on it, but at this moment I would prefer to leave it as it is for now.” She also indicated that she has no immediate plans to join another political party.
Kissoon’s resignation comes after a notable incident at the PNCR’s Congress Place headquarters, two weekends ago, where she reportedly received a hostile reception from some party supporters during an event. This marked her first return to the headquarters since she accused PNCR Leader Aubrey Norton of sexual harassment in June 2024 — a claim Norton has denied. The party’s women’s, elders’, and youth arms had pledged to investigate the allegations, but, whether the investigation occurred or not, is a well-kept secret.
Vanessa Kissoon’s political journey has been deeply intertwined with the PNCR and the community of Linden, Region 10. She began her parliamentary career in 2006, representing Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), and quickly established herself as a formidable advocate for her constituents. Her tenure in the National Assembly was marked by her unwavering commitment to addressing the concerns of Linden residents, particularly during periods of social and economic challenges.
As a Region 10 Member of Parliament, she was a leading figure in the 2012 resistance to the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government’s attempt to impose higher electricity tariff in Linden, a community classified as depressed. The tariff was withdrawn.
Kissoon also waged a valiant fight for improved working conditions for female security guards, including night care centres for their children to ensure supervision and safety.
Beyond her parliamentary duties, Kissoon has been an active participant in trade unionism. She serves on the Executive of the Upper Demerara Teachers Union Branch and has been elected to the Committee of Management of the Guyana Public Service Cooperative Credit Union (GPSCCU). Kissoon’s work in these institutions have focused mainly on enhancing educational opportunities and advocating for workers’ rights.
Kissoon’s dedication to community development is further exemplified by her founding of the Linden Youth Corps, an organisation aimed at empowering young people through skills training and community service. She also established the Virtuous Women on a Mission group, which addresses women’s issues and provides support to women in the community. Her involvement with the Linden Special Needs Board and the Region 10 Broadcasting Incorporative Board underscores her commitment to inclusive community development.
However, her political career has not been without challenges. In 2014, Kissoon was suspended, without due process, from the PNCR following a verbal altercation with the then-General Secretary, the late Oscar Clarke. Kissoon stood her ground, insisting that the call in some quarters for her to apologise to Clarke without an inquiry, would be a violation of her right which she will not condone. In 2021 the issue was reviewed by the party’s Central Executive Committee and her full membership status was restored.
Despite these internal conflicts, Kissoon’s dedication to her constituents never wavered, and she continued to be a vocal advocate for the people of Linden where she is widely respected.
Kissoon’s impact on Linden and the broader Guyanese community is undeniable. Her steadfast commitment to advocacy, education, and community development has left an indelible mark on local politics and public advocacy.
