The female segment of the competition also showcased exceptional talent, with standout performances from players such as Aquiba Reynolds (FEH), Feary Duncan from the Faculty of Natural Sciences (FNS), and Jennifer Paulino from the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry (FAF), each scoring two goals.

Assistant Sports Director Mr Osafa Dos Santos highlighted the significance of the tournament, stating: “The Football Champions Cup is more than just a game. It provides a platform for our students to showcase their abilities, foster a sense of unity, and build lifelong skills through competition and teamwork. Events like this strengthen our university community in meaningful ways.”

The tournament format featured group stages leading into intense knockout rounds, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarter-finals. From there, it was a battle of skill and strategy, culminating in an electrifying finale.

Mr Dos Santos also praised the event’s atmosphere: “The energy during the tournament was incredible, with chants, cheers, and the undeniable excitement of friendly competition. Events like this remind us of the joy and spirit that sports bring to our campus.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed Martin, who spoke at the opening ceremony, praised the participants for their dedication and encouraged continued involvement in sports. She commended the Sports Unit for successfully hosting the tournament and handed over prizes to the winners, alongside Director of UG’s Tactical Online Services Unit (TOS), Dr Malcolm Williams, Ms Karen Wills from the Students’ Welfare Department in the University Registry, and Director of the Department of Events, Conferences and Communications, Mr Jainarine Deonauth.

Professor Mohamed Martin also lauded the incredible talent displayed during the competition, noting the importance of sports in fostering camaraderie and University pride.

The Champions Cup’s success has set the stage for an exciting lineup of upcoming events organised by the Sports Unit, including Inter-Faculty Volleyball, T-10 Cricket, and Track & Field Super Champs in 2025. These events aim to further enhance the university’s sports culture. (University of Guyana)
