Dear Editor,
We are writing to request the publication of the attached letter, which appeals to the Government of Guyana to reinstate the right of inmates to physically appear before the courts, rather than participate in virtual proceedings.
The letter, on behalf of the Bartica United Youth Development Group (BUYDG), outlines the importance of in-person hearings in upholding the integrity, fairness, and credibility of Guyana’s judicial system. It highlights several concerns regarding the continued use of virtual hearings, including issues related to the right to a fair trial, technical failures, unlawful detention, and issues with privacy and security.
It is important to emphasize that the concerns raised in this letter should be of concern not only to inmates but to all Guyanese. As any citizen, whether innocent or guilty, could find themselves before the judiciary at any point, it is vital that the fairness and transparency of the judicial process be upheld for everyone in Guyana. The right to a fair trial and effective access to justice is a fundamental issue that affects all members of society, and we call on all Guyanese to support this appeal for a change in how court hearings are conducted.
The letter also cites Guyana’s constitutional and international human rights obligations to provide a fair hearing, prompt justice, and freedom from arbitrary detention. It further notes the judicial preference for physical attendance expressed by some judges and magistrates.
We believe this is an important issue that deserves widespread public attention and discussion. By publishing this letter, you would be providing a platform for the advocates for the restoration of this fundamental right and contribute to dialogue around access to justice in Guyana.
We kindly request that you consider publishing the attached letter in your esteemed media outlet. Your attention to this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours truly,
Kellion Leps
General President (ag)
