Yohan Savory is a 29-year-old photojournalist for the Guyana Chronicle, a publication under the Guyana National Newspaper Limited (GNNL). For Yohan, photography has always offered him a distinct way to view and interpret the world.
“From an early age, I realised I had a unique lens through which I viewed my surroundings. Yet, it wasn’t until 2018—while working at Guyana Power and Light—that I decided to take this creative passion more seriously,’ he said.
Further, he added, “As I ventured further into the field, I connected with friends and mentors who were instrumental in guiding me, helping me refine my skills and understand the industry. These experiences enabled me to develop a distinct artistic style that centers on dark, grunge aesthetics, often with elements of horror and the macabre. My fascination with these themes allowed me to convey complex emotions and narratives through my work, embracing a blend of beauty and intensity that resonates with viewers on a deeper level.”
When he began branding his photography business, Savory experimented with various names, starting with Yohan Savory Photography. However, over time, he wanted a brand that was more personal, a name that mirrored his individuality and passion for self-expression and that’s how Inked Media Productions was born—a nod to his tattoos and a reflection of my creative identity.

For Savory, breaking into the industry wasn’t easy. Like many emerging artists, he faced his share of challenges. At one point, he was relatively unknown. However, over the years, he worked diligently to promote himself and build a presence. During that time, one of the most valuable lessons he learned was the importance of staying open to constructive criticism and advice from seasoned professionals. Their insights helped Savory sharpen his skills and navigate the intricacies of photojournalism and freelance work
To aspiring photographers, Savory’s advice is straightforward: “Get certified to establish your credibility and collaborate with professionals in the field to gain practical experience and constructive feedback. Don’t hesitate to offer pro bono work at the beginning; it’s a strategic way to build your portfolio, establish trust, and expand your client list. Remember, each shoot is an opportunity to grow and refine your vision.”
