Labour Day Divide: Patronage, Power, and the Betrayal of Workers

𝙇𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝘿𝙖𝙮 2026 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙖 𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩—𝙞𝙩 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙨.

It is not accidental. It is not ideological. It is engineered.

At the center of this fracture is a government that has mastered the art of political patronage, and a President who appears entirely comfortable using access, favour, and proximity as tools to neutralize dissent. What unfolded at State House was not a celebration of workers—it was a demonstration of control.

𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙚 𝘿𝙪𝙣𝙘𝙖𝙣’𝙨 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜; 𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜. 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙖 𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙨, “𝙞𝙛 𝙬𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙮 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙, 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙,” 𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙚𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙜𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚—𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙩. 

𝘽𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙮. 𝙋𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙡𝙮. 𝙐𝙣𝙖𝙥𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮.

That kind of statement does not emerge in a vacuum. It thrives in an environment where loyalty is rewarded, where criticism is inconvenient, and where sections of organized labour are drawn into the gravitational pull of political power.

This is how movements are captured.

Because while that endorsement echoed across manicured lawns, the lived reality of workers told a very different story. A story shaped by policy failures that no amount of ceremony can conceal.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙚𝙭𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙨 “𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙” 𝙞𝙣 𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙢𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙞𝙡 𝙬𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙮𝙚𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙗𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙡𝙤𝙬?

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 “𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙” 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙩-𝙤𝙛-𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙛𝙤𝙤𝙙, 𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣?

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 “𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙” 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙖 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙢𝙪𝙢 𝙬𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙨 𝙨𝙤 𝙛𝙖𝙧 𝙗𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡-𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙙 𝙥𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙮?

These are not abstract concerns. They are policy outcomes.

And instead of confronting them with urgency and structural reform, the government has leaned heavily on optics—cash grants, subsidies, and public relations narratives designed to soften the blow without addressing the root. Temporary relief has replaced lasting solutions. Visibility has replaced value.

𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙨.

Because when benefits are distributed in ways that feel selective, strategic, or politically convenient, they cease to function as policy—and begin to function as leverage. Leverage over communities. Leverage over institutions. And, critically, leverage over voices that are supposed to remain independent.

The result is what we witnessed: a faction of labour leadership that no longer challenges power, but coexists comfortably within it.

𝙔𝙚𝙩, 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙚, 𝙖 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝.

Seepaul Narine’s declaration—that workers deserve their share of the wealth they create “not as a favour, but as a right”—cut against the grain of submission. It reintroduced a principle that has been dangerously diluted: that dignity is non-negotiable.

But here lies the tension that cannot be ignored.

𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙠𝙚𝙣 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙙𝙤𝙬 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧. 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙭𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨. 𝙄𝙩 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙, 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙤𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙣 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙛𝙖𝙧 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙜𝙤. 𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙞𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙩-𝙤𝙛-𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙡𝙚𝙙𝙜𝙚𝙙, 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙬𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢?

𝙄𝙛 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙬𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝, 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙨 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙙?

𝙄𝙛 𝙙𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙥𝙡𝙚, 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙗𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙙?

𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙂𝙪𝙮𝙖𝙣𝙖’𝙨 𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮.

𝙉𝙤𝙩 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨. 𝙉𝙤𝙩 𝙝𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮. 𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚.

𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙙𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙩𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧—𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙪𝙡, 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙙, 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧, 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙙, 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚—𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨, 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙩 𝙪𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙜𝙜𝙡𝙚.

𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡. 𝙄𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙞𝙩.

A fractured labour movement is easier to manage. Easier to influence. Easier to showcase when convenient, and sideline when necessary. Patronage does not need to silence everyone—it only needs to soften enough voices to weaken collective pressure.

That is exactly what is happening.

Labour Day, then, becomes less about workers and more about narrative management. A stage where allegiance is displayed, dissent is diluted, and the illusion of unity masks a deeper erosion of purpose.

𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨, 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙨.

𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙬𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢.

𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 “𝙙𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩” 𝙗𝙮𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙙𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨.

𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙠 𝙗𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙡𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙙𝙖𝙮—𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧.

𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜.

The tragedy is not simply that parts of the labour movement have aligned themselves with power. It is that this alignment is happening at a time when workers need stronger, louder, more unyielding advocacy than ever before.

𝙊𝙞𝙡 𝙬𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. 𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙙, 𝙞𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙪𝙡𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨—𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙥𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮, 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙬, 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙨.

So the question is no longer whether the labour movement is divided.

It is whether that division will continue to serve the interests of political power—or finally return to the service of the people it was built to defend.
