In a remarkable achievement, Judy Winter, a proud Wapichan woman from the remote South Rupununi village of Bush Mouth, has graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree with Distinction from the University of Guyana. Her journey is an inspiring story of determination, sacrifice, and gratitude, as she overcame challenges to achieve her dreams and bring pride to her community.

From humble beginnings, Judy’s path to success was paved by the unwavering support of her family, who made incredible sacrifices to ensure her education. Judy shares that on weekends her parents walked hours to and from their farm to plant, reap and sell peanuts to buy her a laptop and to otherwise provide for her college journey, they even rode miles to the Rupununi River to catch fish for her. Their dedication and sacrifices, Judy says, is something she hopes to repay someday.

Judy’s journey was also supported by her community, friends, sponsors, and the South Rupununi District Council (SRDC), who believed in her and fueled her passion for law. She found inspiration and guidance from her mentor, who instilled in her the confidence to pursue a career in law.

In her heartfelt message, Judy expressed gratitude to all those who played a role in her success, from family and friends to lecturers and kind strangers. She also offered congratulations to her fellow graduates and expressed pride in their shared accomplishments.

Reflecting on her journey, Judy said, “One thing I learned from my journey at UG is that there are kind people in this world, and I was fortunate to experience such kindness.”

The journey may have been challenging, but Judy Winter moves forward with a grateful heart, ready to continue making a difference. Congratulations to Judy on this well-deserved accomplishment, a true testament to resilience and the strength of community support.
