Covid pandemic spiraling out of control—says Harmon

Leader of the Opposition, Joseph Harmon, on Friday, said the Covid-19 pandemic is out of control in Guyana with over 11,000 confirmed cases and the numbers rising sharply each day. In an effort to help manage the crisis the Opposition, Harmon said, will be publishing guidelines for the public national management of the pandemic.

To date over 260 persons have been killed by the virus while more than 10 persons are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Harmon said the Opposition has taken note of reports coming out of the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO), which suggest that there are new and deadlier strains of the virus in Guyana.

He said despite this possibility, the PPP/C Administration has not put the requisite systems in place to confirm whether there are additional strains in the country. “It seems as though they have just thrown their hands up in the air and are taking an approach which say – whatever will be will be. We already know that Vice President Jadgeo has said that if people have to die then so be it,” Harmon said during a virtual press conference.

He said the measures implemented by the PPP/C Administration are weak and are being selectively enforced. “The use of GDF buses with persons crammed into them presents a disturbing image and can increase rather than hinder the spread of the virus,” he said. Concerned about the continued mismanagement of the spread of Covid-19 in Guyana, APNU+AFC, he said, has taken a decision to publish guidelines for the public national management of the pandemic.
