As we approach the 2025 elections, the political landscape in Guyana becomes increasingly charged. The People’s Progressive Party (PPP), having faced mounting criticism for its governance, is expected to take significant steps to secure its hold on to power. It’s crucial for us as citizens to remain vigilant and informed during this period.

The PPP has a history of employing various strategies to consolidate power, and there’s every reason to believe they will do so again. Past experiences suggest that as dissent grows, we may see an uptick in crime and other forms of intimidation aimed at silencing opposition voices. Kidnappings and acts of violence could be weaponised against those who dare to speak out against the government’s policies and practices.

Opposition Parties Asleep While Government Campaigns On

Our political history is marred by instances where the PPP governments have resorted to unsavoury tactics to suppress criticism. It’s vital that we recognize the signs of this behavior as we move closer to the elections. We must be cautious and aware that threats to our safety could be part of a broader strategy to stifle dissent.

The PPP’s actions may include leveraging state resources to influence public opinion, manipulating the media (which they always do), and employing aggressive tactics against opposition leaders and members of society. These maneuvers can create an environment of fear, discouraging citizens from exercising their democratic rights.

We are at a crossroads. The choices we make now will define the future of our nation. Let us remain vigilant, united, and committed to protecting our democratic values as we approach the elections. The power of the people must prevail over any attempts to instill fear and manipulate the political landscape. Together, we can ensure that our voices are heard and our rights are upheld.
