By Mark DaCosta- In an escalation of the tension between the government and political and general opposition, a police raid on the family home of prominent social media activist, Melissa Atwell, is being widely condemned as a politically motivated attack. The raid, carried out on September 17, 2024, at the East Bank Demerara residence of Atwell’s mother and grandmother, has raised serious questions about the conduct, intent, professionalism, and independence of the Guyana Police Force (GPF). Those questions are being raised across the social media landscape.

According to reports, a senior police officer led a group of ranks in searching the home under the pretext of looking for narcotics. Despite claims that the officers were acting on intelligence, no illegal substances were found inside the house. A suspicious package allegedly containing cannabis was reportedly discovered in an alley behind the premises, a location that is accessible to anyone.

Atwell, widely known by her online persona “Melly Mel,” has been a vocal critic of the PPP-led government, frequently using her platform to expose alleged corruption and abuse of power. In a post following the raid, she accused the government and the police of targeting her family in an effort to intimidate and silence her. “My family is now the target of this [PPP] government and the Guyana Police Force,” she wrote. “Harassing and intimidating my 87-year-old grandmother suffering from dementia and my mother… Doing everything to break me because I’m refusing y’all hush money. This God don’t sleep.”

Opposition political parties have been quick to decry the actions of the police, characterising the raid as an example of state persecution. The Alliance For Change (AFC) issued a strong statement condemning the incident, calling it a violation of civil liberties and the rule of law. “This invasion, conducted without proper regard for legal protocols, is a blatant abuse of police power,” the AFC declared, further describing the raid as part of a pattern of intimidation aimed at silencing dissent.

The AFC also criticised the police for allegedly bypassing several high-ranking officers within the GPF, raising concerns about the legality and transparency of the operation. Reports indicate that senior officers, including the Commissioner of Police and the Commander of the East Bank Demerara division, were unaware of the search until after it had been conducted. Such procedural breaches have cast doubt on the legitimacy of the raid, with opposition figures questioning whether it was carried out under proper judicial authority.

“The targeting of individuals, especially those who exercise their right to free speech, undermines the democratic fabric of our country,” the AFC further noted, calling for an independent investigation into the incident and accountability for those responsible. The party emphasised that the rights of citizens must be protected, especially in cases involving criticism of the government.

Atwell’s role as a whistleblower has made her a key figure in opposition to the current administration. Over the past year, she has consistently used her platform to expose what she claims are acts of corruption and misconduct by senior government officials. Her efforts have drawn significant attention, but they have also allegedly made her a target of retaliation by the authorities.

Last year, Atwell lodged a “transnational complaint” with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States, where she currently resides. The complaint accused the Guyanese government of stalking and harassing her through cybercrime charges, a claim that adds weight to her belief that the recent raid was an extension of these intimidation tactics. Despite the mounting pressure, Atwell has remained steadfast, vowing to continue exposing corruption in the country.

As political tensions rise, the incident has sparked broader concerns about the misuse of police powers in Guyana. Many have said that the raid on Atwell’s family home represents not only an attack on her but also a dangerous precedent for the suppression of dissent in the nation. The opposition’s call for accountability and a transparent investigation into the incident has resonated with many who fear that civil liberties are being eroded under the current administration.

Melissa Atwell, known as “Melly Mel,” has become a household name due to her outspoken stance on corruption and her bold criticism of the government. With a substantial following on social media, she has consistently highlighted injustices in the country, particularly those involving high-ranking officials. Despite the challenges she faces, including what she describes as attempts by the government to silence her through intimidation, Atwell has continued her fight for transparency and accountability in Guyana.
