The construction of the new highway on the East Bank Demerara, named the Heroes Highway, stands as a testament to the visionary leadership of Guyana’s first Executive President, Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham. So says former Georgetown Mayor Pt. Ubraj Narine.

In a statement, Narine, produces evidence of the plan during the Burnham administration that included this artery on the East Bank Demerara as part of Guyana’s development agenda.

Narine reminds that this critical transportation artery was part of Burnham’s ambitious plans to enhance the country’s infrastructure and connectivity, which was outlined in the “Highway Approaches to Georgetown and New Amsterdam Development Plans” of the 1970s.

Narine outlines that under Burnham’s guidance, the Government of Guyana embarked on a strategic initiative to modernise the country’s road network, recognising its pivotal role in fostering economic growth and improving the lives of citizens in the future.
The new highway was a centerpiece of the broader infrastructure 1970 development plan, designed to improve mobility and accessibility between the capital city of Georgetown and the surrounding East Bank Demerara region, Narine highlights.

The former mayor asserts that “as Guyana continues to evolve and modernise, the new highway stands as a lasting legacy of Burnham’s vision for the country’s development, and serves as a reminder of the transformative power of strategic infrastructure investment and the enduring impact of his visionary leadership.”

The information provided by Narine, a member of the People’s National Congress (PNC), the party founded by Burnham, debunks accusations by the governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP) that Burnham and the PNC governments were bankrupt of vision. In fact, the revelation proves how reliant the PPP is on the PNC’s ideas to develop Guyana and suggests had Burnham the financial resources Guyana has today, the country would have been further along the development continuum.

Forbes Burnham was Guyana’s Premier from 1964-1966; Prime Minister from 1966-1980, and President with Executive responsibility from 1980-1985. He was born on February 20, 1923 and died August 6, 1985.
