EPA Issues Health Advisory as Visible Haze Covers Georgetown

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a public advisory regarding the development of a visible haze in the Georgetown area. According to the EPA’s air quality sensors in Eccles and central Georgetown, the air quality has been detected in the ‘moderate’ range, which exceeds the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for good air quality.

The EPA attributes the decline in air quality to an increase in particulate matter in the atmosphere combined with high humidity levels. Additionally, the presence of Saharan dust, as indicated by data from the MyFoxHurricane website, may also be contributing to the current conditions.

In response to these findings, the EPA is urging residents to take precautionary measures to safeguard their health. The public is advised to limit the amount of time spent outdoors and to wear dust masks whenever practicable. These steps are crucial to reducing exposure to particulate matter, which can have adverse health effects, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions.

The EPA has assured the public that they will be notified once air quality levels return to normal and fall within safe parameter ranges. For those seeking near real-time updates on the Air Quality Index in their area, the EPA recommends visiting their official website at https://epaguyana.org. By selecting the ‘Your Environment’ tab and clicking on ‘Air Quality Data,’ residents can access up-to-date information on local air quality.

As the situation develops, the EPA will continue to monitor air quality and provide timely updates to ensure the safety and well-being of Georgetown’s residents. In the meantime, adherence to the recommended precautions will help mitigate potential health risks associated with the current air quality conditions.
