Security cooperation between Guyana and the US appears to deepen

By Mark DaCosta- U.S. Marine Corps Major General Julie Nethercot’s, U.S. Southern Command Strategy, Policy, and Plans Director has visited Guyana. Her visit to Guyana from May 6th to May 8th possibly or probably signals a significant step forward in our nation’s defence and security partnership with the United States, some observers believe. This visit follows closely on the heels of Major General Evan Pettus’ – also of the U.S. Southern Command – engagement in February, probably highlighting a deepening commitment of the United States to bolstering Guyana’s security capabilities.

During her stay, Major General Nethercot engaged in pivotal discussions with Brigadier Omar Khan, Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF). The focus of their deliberations was on ongoing security cooperation initiatives aimed at advancing our technology platforms. Reflecting on this, the U.S. Embassy in Georgetown stated, “Maj Gen Nethercot met with Brigadier Omar Khan…to discuss ongoing security cooperation and security assistance initiatives to advance technology platforms.”

Highlighting the significance of the visit, the U.S. Embassy emphasised, “Maj Gen Nethercot’s visit to Guyana underscores the continued importance and unwavering commitment the United States places on the U.S.-Guyana bilateral defense and security partnership.” This, some observers beleve, reaffirms the United States’ support for our nation’s efforts in enhancing our defence capabilities.

Moreover, the United States Security Cooperation Office (USSCO) outlined various programs aimed at fortifying our defence apparatus. These include:

– Military Support to Security, Stability, Transition and Reconstruction Operations

– Foreign Military Financing

– Foreign Military Sales

– International Military Education and Training

– Medical Support Training and Operations

– Humanitarian Assistance, Civic Action and Disaster Relief Programs

– Military to Military Exchange/Training Programs

Understanding the pivotal role of the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) in shaping regional security, it becomes evident that Major General Nethercot’s visit holds profound significance. SOUTHCOM oversees strategic planning, policy development, and security cooperation coordination for Latin America and the Caribbean. As highlighted by the USSCO, its mission is to deter aggression, defeat threats, and ensure a secure, free, and prosperous Western Hemisphere.
