By Mark DaCosta- As we eagerly approach Linden Town Week 2024, often referred to as the heart of our nation, Linden, is gearing up for an extraordinary celebration. From April 26 to May 6, the community will unite under the theme “One People! One Nation! One Destiny! Linden! The Heart of Guyana!”

According to a press release from the Linden Mayor and Town Council, with some 51 diverse events planned, Linden Town Week 2024 promises to be a vibrant cultural, recreational, and educational experience. The obviously inclusive and transparent selection process for the official calendar reflects well on the  community. The approved events, ranging from art exhibitions and sports competitions to community service projects and educational workshops, embody the historically acknowledged spirit of Linden.

The journey to finalise the calendar began with a meeting where applicants presented their ideas based on event proposals. The subsequent vetting process culminated in an extraordinary meeting on February 26th, solidifying the official calendar of events.

Linden Town Week is more than a series of events; it’s a celebration of what Linden is as a community. It is an opportunity to come together, showcase talents, and work towards common objectives. The officially approved calendar reflects the town’s commitment to Linden’s rich cultural heritage.

Nestled in the heart of our country, Linden boasts a strategic location that has contributed to its historical significance. With a population brimming with diversity and vibrancy.

The history of Linden is intertwined with the development of Guyana. Established as a town in 1970 and named Linden, the community has played a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of our country.

Linden’s economy is a crucial pillar of our nation’s prosperity. The town’s economic contributions, spanning various sectors, including logging, mining , and cottage industries reflect the resilience and hard work of residents.

However, even as Guyanese celebrate, it’s crucial to acknowledge and  address the historical neglect that has befallen the predominantly African Guyanese community. The successive People’s Progressive Party (PPP) governments have, too often, overlooked the needs and aspirations of Linden’s residents.

This neglect must stop. Our government must not discriminate based on race or political affiliations. It’s time for equitable service delivery that considers the well-being of every Linden resident. We must stand united, irrespective of differences, to ensure a brighter future for the town.

As we approach Linden Town Week 2024, let us use this occasion to call for unity and equitable governance. The community deserves fair treatment and equal opportunities. Regardless of political affiliations or ethnic backgrounds, every Linden resident contributes to the vibrancy of Guyanese culture.

Let us seize this moment to demand change, to advocate for a government that prioritises the well-being of all citizens. Linden’s potential is immense, and with unity and equitable governance, we can unlock a future of prosperity for Linden.

Linden Town Week 2024 is a call for change. It is an opportunity to address historical neglect, demand equitable governance, and forge a path towards a brighter future for the town. As we immerse ourselves in the festivities, let us remember the importance of standing united and working towards a common destiny for all communities, Including Linden.
