This year marks a momentous occasion for the St. Margaret’s Scout Group, celebrating 60 years of shaping young lives and contributing to the development of Guyana. Since its inception in 1964, the Group has served as a beacon of positive influence, instilling valuable skills and fostering responsible citizens who have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, military officials, business leaders, scientists, and more.
The Scout Movement, with its core values of service, leadership, and character development, leaves an undeniable mark on individuals. St. Margaret’s Scout Group embodies this philosophy, providing a platform for young people to explore their potential, learn life skills, and build confidence. Through activities like camping, hiking, community service projects, and badge-earning programs, Scouts develop teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and a sense of responsibility – all crucial ingredients for success in adulthood.
“Scouting has had a profound impact on my life,” Yonnick David, a former St. Margaret’s Scout who is now the Chief Commissioner of Scout Association of Guyana and a businessman. “The values I learned, the leadership skills I honed, and the friendships I made have laid the foundation for my achievements. I am incredibly grateful for the guidance and support I received during my childhood with the Group. And it’s because of this I’ve returned as a leader since remigrating to Guyana.”
The impact of St. Margaret’s Scout Group extends beyond individual success stories. Scouting fosters a sense of community and civic engagement, encouraging young people to become active participants in their society. These values are fundamental for building a strong and thriving nation.
“The dedication of the leaders and volunteers at St. Margaret’s Scout Group has made a remarkable difference in the lives of countless young people,” says Zaida Joaquin, Assistant Group Scout leader of St. Margaret’s and also the holder of the Arrow of Achievement. “By nurturing future leaders and responsible citizens, they are contributing significantly to the development of Guyana.”
As St. Margaret’s Scout Group celebrates its 60th anniversary, it looks forward to continuing its legacy of empowering young people and shaping the future of Guyana. The Group serves as a testament to the enduring power of scouting and its ability to build stronger individuals and, consequently, a stronger nation.
To celebrate this milestone, St. Margaret’s Scout Group will be hosting a special open meeting with snacks, food and golf, where former scouts and leaders are invited to stop by and reconnect with the group. The group also encourages parents interested to bring their children to meet other scouts their age and potentially become a member of the association. The open event will be on February 17th at 1400hrs at the Scout Association of Guyana, Woolford Ave, between Camp and Albert streets
