Former Georgetown Mayor and Vice Chair of the Institute for Against Discrimination (IFAAD) Pt. Ubraj Narine, last weekend teamed up with Opposition Parliamentarians on a visit to Region 2 at the request of concerned residents from the Charity market.
The Opposition delegation comprised Members of Parliament Natasha Singh Lewis, Annette Ferguson, Maureen Philadelphia and Roysdale Forde SC who is also IFAAD legal counsel.
During the visit, the delegation actively engaged with the local community to gain a deeper understanding of their pressing issues and challenges.
The primary focus of the visit was to address the escalating concerns surrounding the high cost of living and the reported authoritarian behavior of regional officials.
Narine, renowned for his commitment to community development and advocacy for the people, and his team lent a sympathetic ear to the residents / vendors, listening attentively to their grievances and gaining valuable insights into the issues affecting their daily lives.
Narine told Village Voice News the government must do more for people. “This is an oil rich economy and life shouldn’t be this hard for people.”
Forde also indicted the government. He said the pervasive poverty in Guyana amounts to grave human rights violations.  According to him Guyanese are facing too many problems which could be resolved under caring leadership.
The cost of living, he said, is too high making basic necessities beyond the reach of ordinary people.
“Everywhere you go it is a sad story. The stories are not that Guyanese do not have the ability to thrive but they are not being given the support of government to unleash their potentials and improve their quality of of life”
The visit to Region 2 underscored the unwavering dedication of the team to the welfare of all citizens, ensuring that their concerns are not only acknowledged but also addressed through collaborative efforts with civil society, local authorities and central government.
