Former Georgetown Mayor Pt. Ubraj Narine and Vice Chairman of the Institute For Action Against Discrimination is  calling on the authority to address discrimination against seawall vendors.
Narine noted that it is a grave display of discrimination in the decision that resulted  in vendors along Kingston seawall being deprived of their livelihoods and denied the opportunity to renew their business peacefully.
Last evening Narine met with the affected vendors to address this alarming situation.
For over 15 years, these hardworking vendors have been an integral part of the development of Kingston seawall, providing essential goods and services to locals and tourists alike.
However, their longstanding presence has been met with indifference and neglect by the PPP Government, an act that represents discrimination to the highest extent, the Vice Chairman stated.
During his meeting with the vendors he not only expressed solidarity but vowed to fight against such unfair treatment.
This is utter disregard for citizens’ rights to earn a living, evident in the deprivation of opportunity to secure a new stall, a basic necessity for their business operations, Narine emphasised.
“The PPP Government must be held accountable for their disregard of basic human rights and their failure to provide equal opportunities for all citizens.”
The Vice Chairman lamented “the unfortunate truth that vendors are being denied the opportunity to thrive despite their immense contribution to the local economy.” These vendors have formed part of the national culture, provide a service and unique attraction for consumers.
He pointed out that the persistent discrimination against the vending population is a clear injustice, and “we stand united in our fight against it.”
The Institute for Action Against Discrimination said the organisation commits to work tirelessly to expose and rectify the discriminatory practice. “Discrimination in any form must not be tolerated, and it is crucial that all citizens are given equal opportunities to prosper and succeed.”
To this end, the Institute is urging the government to reassess its policies and work towards creating an inclusive and fair environment for all. “It is imperative that the PPP Government immediately address this matter and take the necessary steps to rectify the situation.”
