In the heart of Queens, New York, the summer air buzzed with the excitement of a girls’ basketball summer league in Brooklyn. These leagues weren’t just about playing the game; they were a pathway to skill development, visibility for college scholarships, and forging lifelong connections that nurtured crucial soft skills. But for me, there was one obstacle: the daily commute. That’s where our silent, strong, and wise coach, Barney, stepped in. Day after day, he picked up a carload of us, shuttling us to and from practice and games. His commitment spanned over two years, even longer for the younger ones.

Barney’s investment yielded substantial returns. My basketball skills grew stronger, my self-confidence soared, and college scholarship offers flowed in. Community influencers like Barney are indispensable, especially when parents are unable to bridge the gap.

Reflecting on my childhood in Guyana, I recall influential adults shaping my development. My mother epitomized brilliance, empowerment, and determination. My father personified strength, stability, and a deep appreciation for people. Yet, some children lack positive parental figures, underscoring the significance of community influence. The Church of God of Prophecy on my street played a pivotal role. Beyond nurturing my spiritual growth, it offered countless opportunities for social development that would serve me well.

Today, as we work within communities across Guyana, the power of community influencers is palpable. Volunteers, community activists, concerned parents, churches, elders, and young volunteers collectively contribute to the development of the nation’s youth. They extend invitations, check on absentee children, make learning enjoyable, and tirelessly seek resources and experiences. They are, in many ways, angels. Conversely, young people from vulnerable homes in communities lacking caring adults face a daunting disadvantage. These youths are bereft of a village, a crucial element in holistic development. So, what becomes of them—those without parents or adults who care in their communities? They drift, stumble, underperform in school, drop out, engage in detrimental activities, and ultimately suffer the consequences. They deserve better.

At STEMGuyana, our programmes are built around caring community influencers. It’s an investment, but a necessary one, especially when parents cannot play the role of positive guides and influencers. Across 71 locations spanning every region of Guyana, we work alongside these influencers. Yet, we need more. Children cannot reach their full potential alone.

They need positive adult role models. Strong children are the bedrock of strong communities. Our nation needs more community influencers, our children need more community influencers—your willingness and time are all it takes and STEMGuyana will handle the rest.
