Life often takes unexpected turns, leading us down paths we could never predict. Meet 20-year-old Rushell Hinds, a remarkable individual, hailing from the mining town of Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni). Rushell’s story is a source of inspiration for those seeking purpose and fulfilment in their professional lives and/or career (s).

As it relates to her education, she attended the Three Miles Secondary School and graduated in 2019. Upon completing secondary school, she attended the Guyana school of agriculture (GSA) where she successfully completed a 1-year course in Agro processing passing with higher credits.

Growing up in Bartica, Rushell developed a love for learning and teaching at an early age.

‘I’ve always had a passion for teaching but also developed the mindset that whatever opportunity comes my way, I will take it even though it may not be what I want,” she told this publication.

After graduating from GSA, her intention was to apply at her alma mater(Three Miles Secondary),  to educate the students there in either food & nutrition or agricultural science. However, her application wasn’t accepted, but she did not let that deter her.

Further Rushell added, “I didn’t let that keep me down…I applied for any vacancy I saw even if I didn’t like the position…..”

After consistently applying for jobs, five months after she received a call from the Ministry of Health (MOH) to join the next batch of nursing assistants students in Region 1, however due to circumstances she was unable to attend that program.

Within a month after, Hinds received a call to pursue the Community Health Workers’ program(CHW) which lasts for  6 months, to  which she happily accepted.

After starting the program, she felt a growing curiosity about the world of healthcare. The human body’s complexity and the opportunity to make a tangible difference in people’s lives fascinated her, as such she decided to embark on a new journey, pursuing a career in healthcare. Her course commenced on 27th April 2022 and ended on the 17th September 2022. Rushell successfully completed her course and graduated with distinction.

Today she is a  proud health care worker serving the citizens of Region 7.

One of the biggest challenges she faces is that a lot of people would try to job shame and discourage her for her designation within the healthcare system. However, with prayers and self-confidence she overcomes that challenge. Her passion for health care has grown over the past months, but her career in healthcare doesn’t stop here, as she plans on using this part of her career as a foundation for higher heights.

When asked for advice, she stressed,  “We must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope.” God always knows best, what you may want in life may not be for you, with faith and hard work you’ll find exactly what is meant for you. Never lose hope, they always say that the sky’s the limit but I always say aim higher.”

Rushell’s  journey from an aspiring educator to a compassionate healthcare provider is a remarkable example of how following one’s heart can lead to unforeseen yet deeply meaningful destinations. Her story also reminds us that while the journey may not always be linear, the pursuit of our true calling can lead to a life of profound fulfilment and purpose.
