The Guyanese populaces, particularly those who are poor, vulnerable and ordinary hardworking tax paying citizens, are currently enduring immense suffering masked by the PPP/C regime as progress in Guyana.

“The PPP/C regime is woefully failing our people. Destroying the poor, vulnerable and ordinary people of Guyana seem to be their hallmark,” so said the A Partnership of National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AF).

At its press conference Thursday, the coalition said they do not tolerate the magnitude of anguish and cruelty that has now become part of the fabric of our society and has called on the government to take swift action in the best interest of all Guyanese, especially the poor, vulnerable and ordinary citizens of this nation.

Government within the past few days has moved in and is destroying several homes, leaving occupants devastated, bewildered and uncertain about their future, to make space for the gas to shore project.  The Opposition is calling for prompt action to rescue this dire scenario before it engraves itself as yet another somber chapter in the annals of Guyanese history.

Leader of the Opposition, Aubrey Norton, who met residents of Vreed-en-Hoop Plastic City, described the problem of the government moving to demolish their houses as an act of the rich and powerful, threatening the lives of ordinary citizens who continue to endure immense suffering at the hands of the government.

The opposition pointed out residents have been living in the areas for decades and possess assets worth millions of dollars, but now find themselves perilously threatened by the vested interests of the investors associated with the Vreed-en-Hoop Shore Base Project.

Norton asserted the APNU+AFC is not opposed to investments or ventures for progress in Guyana. But the coaltion’s “fervent support is reserved for a developmental blueprint that aspires to liberate our populace from destitution, particularly those who are impoverished, defenseless, and unprivileged, in stark contrast to the nightmarish ordeal they currently endure, courtesy of a regime that unabashedly favours its rich elite, friends, families, and favorites at the expense of ordinary poor citizens.”

Condemning the present circumstances unfolding at Plastic City as manifestly bereft of any intention to enhance the quality of life of the poor, vulnerable, and ordinary Guyanese citizens, the Opposition said the arbitrary demolition of homes points to the manifestation of the persistent possibility of coercion targeting the hardworking taxpaying Guyanese citizenry of Plastic City.

Unequivocally condemning the trauma and losses the affected residents are going through, the  opposition stated citizens are already bearing the brunt of an onerous cost of living, and the audacious endeavour to exacerbate their suffering by arbitrarily displacing and angering residents, without any form of consultation or adequate compensation to mitigate the disruption to the lives and livelihoods of households, encompassing even the most vulnerable, namely children, is an act that is inhumane, to put it mildly.

Whilst not stating what the coalition will do to halt the behaviour it has condemned, the Opposition has called on Guyanese to act now and be supportive of the people of Jetty/Plastic City in order to preclude the recurrence of previous tragedies such as those that transpired at Success on the East Coast, Mocha and Hill Foot on the East Bank.  These attacks, the opposition said, are barbaric and that of an uncaring government that looks after only the wealthy and privileged.

“The PPP/C regime is woefully failing our people. Destroying the poor, vulnerable and ordinary people of Guyana seem to be their hallmark. We shall not tolerate this magnitude of anguish and cruelty that has now become part of the fabric of our society. We call on the government to take swift action in the best interest of all Guyanese, especially the poor, vulnerable and ordinary citizens of this nation. Intervene promptly to rescue this dire scenario before it engraves itself as yet another somber chapter in the annals of Guyanese history.”

At the same time, the Opposition is demanding amicable and mutually beneficial resolution to this situation, making known the government has a glorious opportunity to operate in the interest of the poor and vulnerable Guyanese residing at Jetty/Plastic City.
