President Irfaan Ali’s appearance on Al Jazeera in Qatar has drawn attention not only to his defence of the Government’s management of Guyana’s oil wealth, but also to his decision to invoke the United States sanctions against Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed while responding to questions about the legitimacy of opposition criticism.
Ali made the comments during his recent visit to Qatar, reportedly on state business. However, the President did not publicly inform the nation of the visit before leaving Guyana, raising questions about the purpose and transparency surrounding the trip.
In the September 13, 2026 edition of “Talk to Al Jazeera,” Ali was questioned about accusations from the political opposition that his government has mismanaged Guyana’s oil wealth and failed to ensure that ordinary citizens are adequately benefiting from the country’s unprecedented revenues.
The interviewer raised the continuing concerns over inflation and the cost of living despite the oil boom, noting that the opposition has accused the government of mishandling the country’s newfound wealth. Ali rejected those accusations.
But rather than keeping his response focused solely on the substance of the allegations, Ali brought Opposition Leader Mohamed into the discussion, pointing to the sanctions imposed on Mohamed by the United States.
That intervention is significant because Mohamed is not merely a political critic of the government. Following the 2025 general elections, he emerged as the parliamentary Opposition Leader and now occupies a constitutionally recognised position in Guyana’s National Assembly.
The President’s reference to the sanctions therefore raises a broader question about whether Mohamed’s status as a US-sanctioned individual was being presented as a reason to discount or undermine the political criticism he now makes in his capacity as Opposition Leader.
A report analysing the interview said Ali began his response to the question on oil wealth by pointing to Mohamed’s US sanctions, noting that they had been imposed before Mohamed became Opposition Leader. The President subsequently defended the government’s management of oil revenues and described opposition claims as “propaganda.”
The sanctions are a matter of public record. On June 11, 2024, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated Mohamed under its Global Magnitsky programme, along with his father, Nazar Mohamed, and several entities associated with them. The Treasury described its action as targeting what it called a corruption network in Guyana.
However, US sanctions are not the same thing as a criminal conviction by a Guyanese court. Mohamed and his father have denied wrongdoing, and the sanctions remain a separate matter from Mohamed’s present constitutional and parliamentary role.
The exchange therefore creates an unusual juxtaposition: an international interviewer asking Guyana’s President to answer criticism about the management of billions of dollars in oil revenue, and the President responding in part by highlighting the personal legal and sanctions status of the man now constitutionally tasked with leading the parliamentary opposition.
In local parlance, Mohamed appears to be “living rent free in Ali’s head,” given the Opposition Leader’s prominence in the President’s response to criticism of the government’s record.
Mohamed, meanwhile, has vowed to continue using his position to hold the government to account and expose what he describes as “what corruption looks like” under the Ali administration.
