According to the report, over the past few months, his health had been deteriorating.

Justice Patterson was appointed as the GECOM Chairman in October 2017. However, in 2019, his appointment by President David Granger was deemed unconstitutional by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), leading to his resignation.

He was set to celebrate his 90th birthday on August 25, 2023.
