In a bid to prevent the complete domination of all levels of government in Guyana by the PPP, African Guyanese citizens will extend a lifeline to the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), despite acknowledging some shortcomings. The common man, driven by an intuitive understanding of the consequences, recognizes that allowing the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government to achieve complete dominance could have irreversible repercussions.
While some APNU voters have expressed their dissatisfaction with the handling of the no-confidence motion, their decision to support the party stems from their past and current experiences under the PPPC government. Since 2020, Guyanese have witnessed a series murders, suicides, extrajudicial killings, fires, high cost of living and all around evil. One citizens stated that, “it seems as if the PPP government has made a blood covenant with evil, because the pressure is unrelenting”, often resulting in tragic outcomes for the Guyanese people.
We have only to remember the murder of the Henry brothers, where the government of Guyana allegedly did everything to impede the investigation. Until today, a mother is dead, family members harassed and no one has paid the price for this evil. More recently, the tragic dorm fire in Mahdia, which claimed the lives of 20 young students, highlighted the government’s failure to address safety concerns raised beforehand. Then there’s the bulldozing of homes belonging to Black mothers in Mocha further fueling the discontent. The government’s actions, seen as a disregard for the welfare and rights of its citizens, intensified the growing disillusionment with the ruling party. The escape and subsequent extrajudicial killing of Blackie, coupled with the nation’s ongoing struggles with fires, suicides, and murders, have deepened the sense of insecurity among African Guyanese.
Today, African Guyanese individuals are aware that their very survival depends on preventing the PPP government’s complete domination of central, regional, and local governments. They know that the consolidation of power by the ruling party will marginalize and neglect their community’s interests, leading to further disparities and injustice.
As the upcoming elections loom, the support for APNU from African Guyanese voters is slowly building. While aware of the party’s imperfections, they see it as their best chance to prevent a bleak future of exclusion and oppression. Their decision is driven by a desire to maintain a balance of power and ensure the representation of diverse voices in the country’s governance.
The stage is set for a critical political battle, with African Guyanese communities standing firm against the potential erosion of their influence and rights. The forthcoming elections will serve as a determining factor in shaping the future of Guyana, with APNU supporters understanding that they are fighting for their very lives.
