The Faculty of Education and Humanities at the University of Guyana will today host a roundtable discussion event at 12:30h as part of a year of activities to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the university opening.
The University, in a release, states the roundtable event, which will be held in-person at the Education Lecture Theatre, Turkeyen Campus, and live-streamed via Zoom (Webinar ID: 930 5177 1353 Passcode: UG60wcs) will feature two roundtables with panellists, including current staff of the university, former students, and practitioners in culture from the wider society.
The roundtable discussions will be preceded by a keynote address from the current Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Prof. Paloma Mohamed Martin, who will speak to her experience as both an academic and a practitioner in the field of culture.
Among those scheduled to attend the event as panellists and moderators are Guyana Prize-winning writer Mosa Telford, artist and writer Dominique Hunter, academic and artist Akima McPherson, academics Carolyn Cummings, Tivia Collins, Vashti Singh, and Candice Hunter.
Bill as the first of future events planned on culture in society a similar roundtable on Men in Culture and Society is planned for later in the year. Additional speakers include Roslin Khan and Bonita Hunter (Dean and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Education and Humanities).
The symposium will feature frank and informative discussions on the state of women in culture and the creative arts, women in academia, and the responsibility of institutions to engage in the preservation and celebration of Guyanese culture and cultural forms. The event is billed as part of the faculty and university’s wider interest in playing a role in public engagement on issues affecting Guyanese society. To this end political and cultural leaders of Guyanese society, members of the diplomatic communities, school children, and members of the wider society are expected to participate.
In celebrating the role women have played, and continue to play, in preserving culture in society, the faculty intends for this roundtable discussion to precipitate a larger valuation of women in society and culture.
