OP-ED: Accepting Defeat with Grace: Upholding the Integrity of the GPA

In a recent letter to this publication, Mr. Neil Marks expressed his grievances regarding the Guyana Press Association (GPA) elections, painting a narrative of alleged impropriety and manipulation. However, it is essential to scrutinize the motivations behind his claims and shed light on the true nature of his actions. Rather than accepting defeat with grace and integrity, Mr. Marks has resorted to baseless accusations and attempts to tarnish the reputation of the GPA.

It is no secret that elections can be contentious affairs, where emotions run high and rivalries intensify. Nevertheless, the true test of character lies in how individuals handle defeat. Unfortunately, Mr. Marks’ letter reveals a profound inability to accept the outcome of the election and a refusal to acknowledge the democratic process that took place.

One of Mr. Marks’ primary concerns was the request for a list of eligible voters before the elections. While transparency is undoubtedly important, it is equally crucial to recognize the necessity of confidentiality to safeguard the voters against intervention by the Guyana government’s highly vindictive operatives who had already set upon the incumbent Nazima Raghubir with a series of vile social media attacks. The executive members, including the incumbent president seeking re-election, were tasked with ensuring a fair and impartial election and by all measures, they were successful.

Moreover, Mr. Marks raises objections about last-minute additions to the voter list, insinuating that these individuals were improperly included, yet he offers no proof, just spurious attacks by someone who purports to possess journalistic integrity.  Shame on you Neil Marks!

In his letter, Mr. Marks alleges that the GPA elections were rigged, citing a handful of individuals who, in his opinion, did not meet the eligibility criteria. More spurious attacks, while his subjective interpretation conveniently disregards the fact that the Returning Officer, tasked with overseeing the electoral process, had the authority to determine the validity of each voter’s qualifications. Furthermore, by seizing photographs of the voter list, Mr. Marks displayed an utter lack of respect for the election proceedings while attempting to undermine the authority of the Returning Officer, but Neil feels empowered, because he is openly an ally to the government of Guyana.  His distasteful performance, however was observed by all in attendance including members of the international community.

It is disheartening to witness Mr. Marks, a journalist who should champion democracy, transparency, and accountability, stoop to such levels of animosity and bitterness. Rather than embracing the democratic process and accepting the will of the majority, he has chosen to vilify the GPA and its elected representatives.

Democracy thrives on the acceptance of both victories and defeats. It is through these experiences that we learn, grow, and strengthen our democratic institutions. The GPA, like any organization, is not immune to imperfections, but its commitment to upholding journalistic principles and fostering a vibrant media landscape should be acknowledged and supported.

Let us not allow the actions of a sore loser to overshadow the strides made by the GPA in promoting responsible journalism and upholding the values it stands for. It is time for Mr. Marks to reflect on his conduct, set aside personal grievances, and work constructively towards the betterment of the press association and the profession it represents.
