The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) said at approximately 08:29 hrs, yesterday, the L5 Transmission Line, which links the Company’s Sophia to Kingston Substations, tripped. At the time of the trip, the L5 Transmission Line was transferring approximately 12 MWs of power.

In a statement, the company stated the sudden loss of generation created a cascading effect, which caused the units at our generating facilities to go offline, disrupting service to customers in Demerara and Berbice.

Restoration efforts commenced immediately, and at approximately 08:31 hrs the first area in Demerara was repowered, and incremental restoration continued until all areas in Demerara and Berbice were repowered at approximately 12:19 hrs, GPL advised.

According to the company an investigation is ongoing to determine the root cause of the shutdown, and the organisation is aware of the inconveniences associated with unplanned service interruptions and continues to work towards minimising these occurrences.
