The Demerara-Mahaica Region’s Republic Anniversary Ceremony on Wednesday, February 22nd, was marred by a shocking display of political thuggery by a government official, according to Regional Chairman Daniel Seeram.

As he spoke about peace, love, and unity, Mr. Seeram invited Hon. Catherine Hughes MP to give brief remarks to the audience. However, the Regional Executive Officer (REO) of the Government, Mr. Donald Gajraj, attempted to snatch the microphone from Mr. Seeram’s hand and insisted that Mrs. Hughes could not speak.

Mr. Gajraj’s actions were described as inappropriate and vile, with witnesses reporting that he behaved like a wild animal. This outburst occurred in the presence of numerous dignitaries, including Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony MP, the Minister of Health, members of parliament, members of the joint services, school children, and other local, regional, and national stakeholders.

In response to this atrocious act, Mr. Seeram withdrew from the ceremony, as he could not partake in a political circus. He called upon all right-thinking Guyanese to take note of this behavior and rebuke it in the strongest possible terms.

Mr. Seeram further added that if this is the government’s representation of ‘One Guyana,’ then he fears for where the nation is headed. He urged the government to take corrective measures and deal with this situation appropriately.

The Regional Chairman’s remarks were well received by the audience, who were shocked and disappointed by Mr. Gajraj’s behavior. Mr. Seeram emphasized that this is not the usual Republican Anniversary speech but an eye-opener for the nation that shows there is a long way to go in building a nation that truly exemplifies One People, One Nation, One Destiny.

Mr. Seeram stated that he would not rest until such behavior is eradicated from the Demerara-Mahaica Region and the Cooperative Republic of Guyana at large. He also called upon the government to take responsibility for Mr. Gajraj’s actions and to ensure that such behavior does not occur in the future.

In spite of the shameful events, Mr. Seeram wished all Guyanese a happy 53rd Republican Anniversary and Mashramani.
