Guyana records one more COVID-19 death

The Ministry of Health (MOH) regrettably informs that as of January 9 one more person who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has died. This takes the total number of deaths from the pandemic to 1,291.

The MOH expresses sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased and will make every effort to provide all the necessary support during this difficult time to render any assistance needed.

The Ministry is also appealing to the general public to respect the confidentiality of the deceased and his family and to allow them to mourn their tragic loss in peace.

All Guyanese are being encouraged to continue to observe the public health measures set out by the Ministry of Health.The public health measure encourages the:

  • the need for everyone five (5) years and older to get vaccinated against COVID-19;
  • the need for everyone to get a COVID-19 booster dose after completing the primary vaccination series;
  • the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving your home;

 the importance of maintaining a safe distance of six feet from others and;

  the need for good hand hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

APNU+AFC deeply saddened by assassination of Haitian President 

The APNU+AFC Coalition said it is deeply saddened and immensely troubled by the news of the assassinations of the President of Haiti, His Excellency Jovenel Moïse and the First Lady Her Excellency Martine Moïse.  

"We condemn this heinous and cowardly act in the strongest possible terms and lament this dark day in the history of the region," the coalition said in a statement. 

"The APNU+AFC extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of President Moïse and First Lady Martine Moïse as well as the Government and people of Haiti. 


We urge a full and thorough investigation that will bring justice to the Moïse family and people of Haiti. 


We assure the people of Haiti that the arms of Guyanese continue to be wrapped around them and our thoughts and prayers remain with them as they navigate this most tumultuous period in their history."
