Today the International Monetary Fund (IMF) hosts a discussion on “Building Resilience and Sustainability in the Caribbean.” Said discussion, to start at 2:00 p.m., will see presentations by high-level panelists, Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director, IMF; Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister, Barbados; and Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister, Canada; and will be moderated by Nigel Clarke, Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Jamaica. The session will last for one-hour.
Building resilience and sustainability in the Caribbean is a collaborative effort among countries within the region and international organisations. Collaboration aims to support the governments and peoples of the region to better manage climate change and other shocks associated with the preservation of human resources and ensuring sustainable exploitation of the environment consistent with 21st century developmental approaches/strategies.
The Caribbean is considered one of the world’s most natural disasters prone regions; deficient in inclusive economic growth, sustainable development and, good and inclusive governance. The pandemic has also occasioned setback in many areas of development, prompting recognition of the challenges by Lilia Burunciuc, World Bank Country Director for Caribbean Countries, who said the “socioeconomic pain caused by the pandemic, the region is even more exposed [and] despite progress, many countries in the region are constrained by high debt levels, poverty and human capital development challenges.” These she noted leave little room for increased government spending, but adaptation efforts are imperative to avoid more serious economic impact in the future.
