It is not yet known officially what was the nature of the discussion, although sources said matters of governance and the rule of law were key subjects.

Guyana has been an unstable place for months and since the new government was sworn in last year August after a protracted wait for the elections results there has been no formal talks between the government and the main opposition.

The National Assembly is also a scene of strife which last week descended into chaos over allegations that a government Minister Kwame McCoy assaulted a opposition MP, Tabitha Sara-Halley.

In a terse Facebook note,  Ali’s office acknowledged the meeting  with representatives of the ABCEU countries at his Office on Shiv Chanderpaul Drive.

The delegation consisted of United States Ambassador to Guyana, Ms Sarah-Ann Lynch; United Kingdom High Commissioner to Guyana, Mr Ross Denny (Acting); Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, Mr Mark Berman and European Union High Commissioner to Guyana, Mr Fernando Ponz Canto.
