…dies hours after smash up on East Bank corridor
A 33-year-old Herstelling, East Bank Demerara man succumbed to his injuries on Friday, hours after he was flung from his cycle after being hit by a minibus on the Herstelling Public Road.
In a statement on Saturday, the Guyana Police Force said the accident, which turned deadly, occurred at around 14:10hrs on the Herstelling Public Road, EBD on Friday.
Police investigations have thus far revealed that the minibus, which was driven by a 43-year-old East Ruimveldt, Georgetown man, was proceeding north on the western carriageway on Herstelling Public Road when it collided with the pedal cyclist.
At the time, the pedal cyclist was riding across the public road from east to west. After hitting the pedal cyclist, the bus then collided with a lorry which was stationary, facing north on the western side of the road. The lorry was driven by a 28-year-old man, who hails from Canal #2 West Bank Demerara.
“As a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist was flung on to the road’s surface where he received injuries and was subsequently picked up in an unconscious condition by public spirited citizen and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor and was admitted a patient at the said institution, suffering from a fractured right hand and skull and later died while receiving treatment,” the police said.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the mini bus and no trace of alcohol found.
Investigations are ongoing.
