Woman dies after soldier crashes into median

A 33-year-old Providence, East Bank Demerara woman was on Tuesday killed in an accident at Mc Doom Public Road, EBD when the vehicle she was traveling in crashed into a concrete median.

Dead is Ameena Sooklall.

The accident occurred at about 22:45h in the vicinity of New Gafoors access road.
According to Police, the driver of a car, a 23-year-old Guyana Defence Force rank Onderneeming, West Bank Demerara was proceeding north along the eastern drive lane of the western carriageway at a moderate speed when “he suddenly felt drowsy, his eyes closed and he lost control of the vehicle and collided to the concrete median at the center of the road”.

Apart from Sooklall and the driver of the vehicle, 26-year-old Alston Edwards of Shopping Plaza, South Ruimveldt Gardens, Georgetown was also a passenger. Both the driver and Edwards received injuries about their bodies and the car was damaged badly.
Edwards and the driver were transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). Edwards was treated and sent away while, the driver remains a patient of the Accident and Emergency Unit.

Meanwhile, Sooklall, was pronounced dead by a doctor on the scene. Her body is at the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting a post mortem examination.
The car has been lodged and is to be examined by a licensing and certifying officer.

Investigations are ongoing.
