A 49-year-old businesswoman of Mabura Hill, Region 10, and her husband were robbed at gunpoint by two bandits, who escaped with more than $4.2M in cash, gold and other valuables.
The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at around 23:00hrs at the couple’s Mabura Hill home.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Guyana Police Force said the businesswoman and her husband – a 40-year-old driver – had just returned home when they were confronted by the bandits, one of whom was armed with a handgun.
While pointing the firearm at the woman, the gunman demanded that all valuables be handed over. During that period several shots were fired in the air. The businesswoman, fearful for her life, handed over a shoulder bag containing G$3.4M, a quantity of raw gold valued G$800,000 and a wedding band valued G$80,000 GYD. The gunman then escaped with the other suspect on a black motorcycle.
Two smart phones and a GPS were also discovered missing from the victims’ home which was ransacked.
Police in Regional Division 10 were immediately called in and acting on information received, the investigators went to a location in Mabura Hill where they saw a black XR motorcycle without number plates parked in a corner.
“The area, which was of thick vegetation, was combed and a male was seen,” the Police reported.
While attempting to apprehend him, the suspect discharged several rounds and escaped. However, the 30-year-old suspect was caught shortly thereafter. The man, who is reportedly a pork knocker from Wismar, Linden, Region 10,was arrested and remains in police custody.
“A search conducted on him unearthed a black haversack containing $2,330,000 GYD, a digital scale, two cell phones and one .38 Special Revolver with 5 live rounds,” the Police reported. The Man’s accomplice is being sought as the probe continues.
Police also disclosed that “The black XR motorcycle was identified as the cycle from the robbery under arms which occurred on about 19:00hrs on Monday November 23, 2020 during which a 30-year-old plant operator of Buck Hall, Wismar Squatting Area was robbed of same.”
