Man dies after crashing bike during police chase

A 20-year-old Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD) man died hours are he crashed his motorcycle while trying to evade a police patrol vehicle on Sunday night.

Dead is Mahendra Deopaul.

The Guyana Police Force, in a statement, said at around 23:45hrs on Sunday, Deopaul was seen riding motorcycle #CK5677 along the Parfaite Harmonie Public Road without a safety helmet.

He was reportedly approached by a Guyana Police Force vehicle #PWW5458, which at the time had its flashlight on and attempted to stop the motorcycle.

“The driver of the motorcycle, upon seeing the police vehicle, drove away at a fast rate of speed in an attempt to evade the police who gave chase behind the said motorcycle. The motorcyclist ended up driving into potholes along the said road where he lost control of the motorcycle and fell onto the road surface where he recieved injuries about his face and body,” the police reported.

The 20-year-old was picked up in an unconscious state by ranks on the patrol, placed into the police vehicle, and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital Accident and Emergency Unit. He later died at 03:46 hours while receiving medical attention.
