24 female foreign nationals held last month after raid at Baroombar

Twenty-four females from Dominica Republic, Cuba and Venezuela were on October 24, 2020 discovered and questioned during a police raid at Baroombar International, the Ministry of Home Affairs said Friday.

The Ministry’s statement comes three weeks after the discovery was made. According to the Ministry there were 15 Venezuelan, one Cuban and eight Dominican Republic nationals at Baroombar.

An investigation has been launched into what is believed to be a trafficking in persons ring.
Meanwhile, the Ministry said that based on investigations, it was discovered that the females from Dominica Republic and Cuba overstayed their time in Guyana. They were interviewed by Police and released on bail and instructed to return to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

Three persons, a security guard, bartender and dispatcher, have since been arrested and released on bail by the Police.
Investigations are continuing.
