Residents of Moraikobai, Mahaica- Berbice (Region Five) can look forward to an improved water system as Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues commits to ensuring that the water woes plaguing the community are resolved.
On Sunday, the Minister and a team from the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) visited the community which has a population count of about 1200 persons to assess their needs. Currently, Moraikobai is being served by a single shallow well which was drilled years ago. In addition to the well, the residents source water from the rain and the Mahaicony river.
During the assessment of the situation, Minister Rodrigues was told that the water supply system is insufficient for the population. Bridget France, a resident of the community, said that there are approximately 20 stand pipes in the community but many are non-functional.
The Minister committed to the repairing of the stand pipes while simultaneously expanding the community’s distribution network.
She also assured Toshao, Colin Adrian that GWI will return to flush the distribution network and repair leaks, as complaints of a high iron content were also raised.
Further, in effort to maintain the system regularly, the Minister said her ministry and GWI will look at employing service men from the village who will be able to address any technical issues in a timely manner.
GWI is expected to present a full report on the village’s water system to the Minister which would pave the way for the drilling of a new well in the new year.
Minister Rodrigues noted that Moraikobai is ripe for investment and assured that the community’s needs will be met by her administration.
Meanwhile, the Minister distributed several hampers to the residents of the community.
