– Four Guyanese and two Barbadians arrested
The Customs Anti-narcotics Unit (CANU) on Wednesday interdicted a Barbados Cargo Vessel at the GNIC Wharf Georgetown containing 71 Parcels of suspected bulk marijuana weighing 69.246 kilograms (152.6 lbs) destined for Barbados.
CANU in a statement said the Barbados Registered cargo vessel marked “CV1 Barbados” laden with perishable goods (vegetables inclusive of plantains, coconut, pumpkins) and other goods was searched twice this week as part of an ongoing operation.
“The vessel was first searched on Tuesday 6th October 2020 and then on the second search done on Wednesday 7th October 2020 large bulk parcels of suspected marijuana
were uncovered concealed in a section of the vessel,” the statement said.
Six suspects are in custody. Two of the crew members of the vessel arrested are Barbadian Nationals whilst the four other suspects arrested are Guyanese nationals. The suspects are expected to make an appearance in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The vessel is believed to have been in Guyana for several weeks and had undergone repairs whilst docked here.
Investigations are ongoing.
