The engineering team if the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation has successfully repaired the severe damages to the retractor span of the bridge and vehicular traffic has been reopened at a normal pace.
This was announced today by the Ministry of Public Works which highlighted that the Management and Technical Team of the Bridge Corporation work beyond the call of duty over the last week to get the job done.
“We wish to use this opportunity to call upon all motorists, especially truck drivers to observe the weight limit as well as the speed limit since both excessive weight and sudden application of brakes create damages that are very costly. During the period of repairs, special retractions were being supervised by the engineers to facilitate marine traffic. Notably, by tomorrow, retractions will be back on schedule, to facilitate both north and southern bound marine vessels,” the Ministry stated.
Meanwhile, Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill said that a long-term solution regarding the weight on the bridge is still being pursued and trucks and heavy motor vehicles will still have restrictions at this time.
He expressed his deepest appreciation to the High-Level Technical Team to former Minister of Public Works, now Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn; engineer Marcel Gaskin from Marcel Gaskin and Associates Ltd; Former Major of the Guyana Defence Force and Former Design Engineer at the Ministry of Public Works, Bhageshwar Murli; Ret’d Specialist in Bridges and Designs, Joseph Holder and engineer Jerry Mark Gouveia and his team from Industrial Fabrications Int.
The Minister also used the occasion to remind of this party’s commitment to the building of a four-lane high span bridge across the Demerara River.
