Leader of the Opposition, Joseph Harmon, ton Thursday called for Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) Commissioner Roshan Khan to be immediately removed from the Commission.

The ERC’s primary aim is to foster harmony and good relations, and at a time when the West Coast of Berbice, and the country by extension, is divided along racial lines as result of the brutal murder of two teenage cousins, Khan found himself pitting Guyanese against each other on Wednesday.

In response to reports that some Guyanese were being beaten, chopped and harassed by irate protestors, the ERC Commissioner said: “Indians in Berbice need to create their watch and protection groups. Equipped with batons and sticks for self defence only. Be firm and clever but never be the aggressor. Protect the minorities in your communities.”

Harmon said Khan’s statement was divisive and racial. “He is no longer fit to sit on the ERC and must be removed forthwith,” the Opposition Leader urged.

Khan issued an apology on Wednesday after receiving widespread condemnation.
