The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) said it is saddened at the passing of Sase Narain OR, SC, CMG, Guyana’s longest serving Speaker of the National Assembly.
He served with distinction from January 1971 to October 1992. Narain was the son of the late Oudit and Soukhai Narain. He grew up at Pouderoyen on the West Bank Demerara and attended Malgre Tout Primary School. There he completed his School Leaving and Junior Cambridge Examinations. He then attended the Modern Educational Institute in Georgetown, where he completed his Senior Cambridge Examination. Sase Narain then travelled to the United Kingdom to pursue legal studies. In 1957 upon completion of his Solicitors Examination at the City Law School in Chancery Lane, London, Sase Narain returned to Guyana.
On 4th January 1971, Sase Narain was appointed Speaker of the National Assembly and served in that capacity until 1992. For his outstanding service to Guyana, Sase Narain was awarded the Order of Roraima. “The leader, central executive committee and members of the PNCR express our deepest sympathy to the relatives of Mr. Sase Narain OR, SC, CMG.”
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister, Hamilton Green in a message said that he learnt with great sadness of the passing of Narain. “Sase was my friend, my brother and whose advice I sought on many occasions, confident of his wisdom and understanding of the world in which we live. His interpretation of miscellany of matters, mostly political and social were always useful,” Green said.
He noted that in his last conversation with Narain several weeks ago, “we reminisced, paying attention to what Parliament was, when he presided over that important law making institution. We have lost a great son of the soil, who mixed with people of every walk of life, gaining their affection and respect.”
“I miss his candor and his wisdom. On behalf of my wife, Jennifer and family, I extend condolences to the bereaved family and ask them to take comfort, in the fact, that he served his country with great distinction.”
