Police on Saturday conducted separate drug eradication exercises in Berbice and Essequibo during which thousands of marijuana plants were found and destroyed.
In Berbice police said under the command of a Gazetted Officer, ranks conducted an eradication exercise in the Berbice River. A field comprising of approximately two acres of cannabis plants was located at Sandhills Village, Berbice River with roughly five thousand plants ranging between three inches to four feet in height with a street value of eleven million eight hundred and seventy thousand dollars as well as three thousand dried plants valued seven million dollars. The plants, dried cannabis, and camp were destroyed by fire. No arrests made.
Over on the Essequibo Coast between 12:15hrs and 17:30hrs an eradication exercise was conducted by ranks at Onderneeming Sandpit Backland, Essequibo Coast. A cannabis cultivation was found with about 300 plants ranging from 3 to 6 feet in height, two motorcycles and a quantity of suspected cannabis seeds ; same were photographed, samples of the suspected narcotics obtained and the remainder subsequently destroyed by fire.
