…duo face financial hardship

The driver and maid attached to former Head of the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited’s (NICIL), Special Purpose Unit (SPU) Colvin Heath- London have both been sent packing by the management of the entity.

Haslyn Heliger, a driver for over 10 years, was fired from his job on November 4, 2020. No reason was provided for his firing.

Heliger told Village Voice News: “They called me up to the office, gave me the letter and said that this is the decision that they made – the Admin Manager and the Finance Manager. No specific reason.”

On Friday, Heliger said he had a three-year contract with the Company that wouldn’t have expired in December 2021 and was open for renewal.

“It has affected me a lot because I have a family to feed and I have a loan at the Bank. Presently, I don’t have no source of income. I don’t know if it has any political affiliation, I won’t be able to say. It’s just surprising to me. Where ever they assigned me or whatever they asked me to do, I did it without hesitation,” Heliger added.

Similarly, Abena Gray, Heath-London’s maid who worked with NICIL from 2018 was fired on the same date as Heliger.

“I was called over at SPU and it [the termination letter] was issued from there,” she said.

Asked whether she believes her termination was influenced by the ongoing matters relating to her former boss, Gray told Village Voice News: “I don’t see any other reason because I never failed to do my job or anything. It affects me a lot because I’m a single mother, I am paying rent, I have bills and if I don’t have a job how can I do so?”

Like Heliger, Gray possessed a contract scheduled to expire in December 2021 with the option to renew.

Village Voice News understands that other staff at NICIL have been fired but has been unsuccessful in attempts to contact them.

Heath-London, who also served as NICIL’s acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) was recently interrogated and arrested by Police for Conspiracy to Defraud the State via land transactions. He released on $200,000 station bail after spending almost 72 hours in police custody.

He has maintained his innocence and has since provided evidence to support his case.

Meanwhile, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall had repeatedly said that the Irfaan-Ali led Government will target persons whom it believes acted illegally under the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) + Alliance for Change (AFC) Administration.
