Leader of the Opposition Aubrey Norton at a press conference last Friday told reporters the Opposition will intensify political action before the end of January. Responding to a question posed by a journalist about putting pressure on the government and what will the Opposition do in that regard, Norton’s response was “simply, there will be an increase in activism and before the month is out you’ll see it.”

Norton who campaigned for the Leadership of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), chairmanship of the A Partnership of National Unity (APNU) and Leader of the Opposition on the promise to do better than his competitors or then incumbent is yet to make good on his promises.

The promise to put boots on the ground has not materialised beyond a few protests, most of which were initiated by party supporters, civil society or affected constituents, where Norton may have made an appearance or two.

The Opposition held some meetings at Stabroek Market and Burnham Court in Georgetown representing the political activism of a Norton-led Opposition, PNCR and APNU.

For two years Norton is still to make public a plan of action to confront the Government as Opposition Leader, preferring instead to talk about what a new coalition government will do should they return to government in 2025 when General and Regional Elections are constitutionally due.

Meanwhile a flyer is circulating for a rally against high cost of living, billed for Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Burnham Basketball Court. The sustainability of this rally, or form of political activism, will be watched by political observers and party supporters who are expressing concerns about the quality of representation from the Opposition in holding the Government accountable.
