Guyanaโ€™s Oil Wealth Must Create Real Opportunities for Young People- APNU

In a united effort to address discrimination in Guyana under the PPP government, a dynamic team, including former Mayor Pt. Ubraj Narine, ret’d Lt Colonel Lelon Saul, and trade unionist Lincoln Lewis from the renowned Institute For Action Against Discrimination (IFAAD), and attorney- at-law Nigel Hughes, Eric Phillips and Sister Panda met with New York State legislators Saturday to discuss potential strategies and solutions.
The New York legislators were Speaker Carl Heastie, Senators Kevin Parker and Roxanne Persaud, Assembly Members Rodneyse Bichotte and Monique Waterman Chandler.
Discrimination in any form is incompatible with the principles of equality, justice, and human rights. Guyana, a developing nation in South America, continues to grapple with this pressing issue, compelling concerned organisations and individuals to come together and seek concrete ways to combat discrimination at the grassroots level.
The collaborative meeting between New York State legislators and the team from the Institute for IFAAD highlighted the significance of international partnerships in fostering positive change. By pooling their expertise and experiences, these diverse stakeholders aim to analyse the current situation and devise a comprehensive plan to dismantle discriminatory practices at every level of Guyanese society.
Recognising the power of solidarity in combatting discrimination, the team from the IFAAD presented a comprehensive report on the prevailing discriminatory practices under the PPP government in Guyana.
The report brought to light various forms of discrimination, including ethnic marginalization, unequal access to education, limited employment opportunities, and gender-based violence.
presented data, case studies, and real-life experiences highlighting the discriminatory practices under the PPP Government in Guyana
The New York State legislators expressed their commitment to fostering change and pledged to use their influential positions to advocate for policies that promote equality and combat discrimination in Guyana. Through collective action and cooperation, we will strive to ensure that Guyana becomes a beacon of inclusivity and equal rights for all its citizens.
Moving forward the Institute for Action Against Discrimination will continue their collaboration, both at the national and international levels. The goal is to create meaningful change and foster a society where diversity is celebrated, and discrimination is eradicated.
The participants emphasised the importance of fostering an environment of equal opportunity, social justice, and harmony in Guyana.
