The residents of Lake Mainstay have something to be incredibly proud of this month. Once more, Ms. Sharmala Singh, the force behind the Lake Mainstay Learning Pod, has been honored with the title of ‘Pod Leader of the Month’.
We recently had the pleasure to chat with Ms. Singh about her experience, and her words paint a passionate picture: “Well my experience so far has been great. To see my community, my children get access to a world that they didn’t have access to before is exhilarating. Not only do my kids benefit from the learning pod but even myself. I always wondered how different animations are made since I love technology but seeing that I can build one too has helped me even in my studies at college. I’m happy STEMGuyana came to my community school. My kids are learning every day and to see them excited makes me want to try harder for them. Great things will come from Mainstay, I always tell my children, one day we’ll be looking at you in the newspaper or on television being the first one to make a new robot or simply invent something.”
Managing a learning pod requires more than just administrative prowess; it necessitates a heart filled with dedication, a mind oriented towards innovation, and a spirit that constantly seeks the growth of every child. Ms. Singh has showcased all these qualities and more.
She has been guiding young minds not just in core subjects like Maths, English, and Science, but also kindling their curiosity in the fields of coding, robotics, and technology. But what truly makes her stand out is her unparalleled enthusiasm for the community and her innate ability to uplift and inspire her students. Whether it’s representing Lake Mainstay in Heritage celebrations or prepping her students for international robotics competitions, she does it all with aplomb.
Karen Abrams, the Director of STEMGuyana, an organization at the forefront of technology education in Guyana, commented, “Managing a learning pod means inspiring children with a culture of confidence. Ms. Singh does all this exceptionally well. When you see her students participating at an awards banquet at the Marriott Hotel or showcasing their innovative projects, it’s clear that her mentorship has touched their lives deeply.”
Under STEMGuyana, which currently manages 41 learning pods sponsored by IDBLab, children receive not just academic support but are also introduced to the enthralling world of technology. With initiatives like the STEM clubs and shows like “Robin the Robot”, STEMGuyana is undoubtedly setting the stage for a brighter, technologically savvy future for the nation.
