A consortium of local catering and food service operators, Guyanese Achieving Together Enterprises (GATE), has successfully acquired a substantial equity stake in Newrest Guyana, the country’s largest offshore supplier to the oil and gas sector.

In a statement by the organisations they said this significant move came as a result of a call from President for the formation of a local consortium, to increase local participation in Guyana’s rapidly growing oil and gas sector. The Ministry of Natural Resources, in response, facilitated a meeting with caterers and food service operators, which ultimately led to the formation of GATE.

“Following a detailed evaluation of several options, GATE began negotiations with Newrest Guyana in November 2022. Newrest was actively seeking to boost its local content credentials and saw GATE as the ideal partner to help realize this ambition.”

This strategic partnership they said will see both sides collaborating to enhance catering and stewarding services for the oil and gas sector. The consortium also plans to work closely with local suppliers to build their capacity and achieve the necessary certification to provide high-quality supplies and inputs to Newrest Guyana.

“We are elated to form part of the company and this is a significant demonstration of what local companies can achieve when they pool their resources,” said GATE Secretary, Clinton Urling. He further highlighted that GATE will be exploring the possibility of undertaking additional commercial projects and initiatives aimed at advancing the catering and restaurant sector in Guyana.

This collaboration represents a pivotal step towards increased local participation in the Guyanese economy. Through this partnership, GATE and Newrest Guyana are not just creating a better food service industry for the oil and gas sectors, but they are also fostering a more inclusive and robust local business environment.
